The Lack of Focus and Direction for Quality Personnel Among Electricians

חוסר מיקוד והכוונה של כוח אדם איכותי לחשמלאים

The electrical industry is one of the most demanding sectors in the economy. It requires high levels of knowledge, experience and professionalism. There is no doubt that this is a sector that can be highly rewarding for those who choose the right paths, develop, and invest in order to reach their goals.

In practice, many electricians are wary of the long road ahead, or don't know where to start, and are therefore tempted by relatively high starting salaries in roles that don't pay off – roles that leave them disheartened, or cause them to give up on developing in the field.

In the electrical industry you can find employers who give electricians work on one-off projects and then let them go once the project ends, or who direct electricians towards jobs that involve a great deal of work not necessarily related to electricity – a mix of plasterboard work, plastering, locksmithing and everything around the electrics. So why does this happen, and is there a solution?

What's problematic about the current situation in the electrical market

The current situation brings with it a fair number of complications, the main one being, as noted, a shortage of quality personnel across various sub-sectors of the electrical field. Among the causes are the following:

  • A lack of trust among professionals in the electrical field towards large companies and various employers.
  • Electricians with high professional abilities becoming stuck in maintenance roles because they want a steady income – even if that means working in an area that doesn't interest them and doesn't reflect their high level of ability.
  • A lack of patience and/or willingness among professionals in the field to study and deepen their expertise in order to progress into managerial and rewarding roles in the electrical industry.

So what can be done?

The electrical field is a remarkable one that calls for professionals with creative thinking, a willingness to learn, a high professional standard and strong problem-solving ability. Those who know how to navigate the field correctly are rewarded accordingly. But Generation Z, which has grown up under the pervasive influence of social media and is characterised by a need for fast, here-and-now results, faces an almost impossible situation – because success in this industry demands persistence, patience and belief in a field that is less glamorous or talked about.

Our advice for electricians starting out:

Try from the outset to choose a specific area within the electrical industry that you want to, and can, develop in – electrical projects, electrical maintenance, high voltage, domestic electrics, and so on. Also check carefully which company you want to work with, so you understand what it can offer you and whether you can develop within it:

  • What does the company do, and what does it specialise in?
  • Who are the company's clients?
  • What is the company's vision in the electrical field? Where does it want to grow?
  • Does it operate in other areas unrelated to electricity? (If so, that may be a problem for what you're aiming at.)
  • Does the company offer a career path?

Once you have answers to all these questions, you'll know whether working at that company suits you, whether you can develop there in the directions that are right for you, and whether there is the potential to earn what you want there.
