Too few people realise how varied and rewarding the electrical industry is for those who progress in it steadily.
Quality professionals in the electrical industry enjoy a very high level of demand in the market – from electrical engineers through to restricted-licence electricians.
So what kinds of career can you build in the electrical industry, and how will you know which professional direction suits you?
As we said, the electrical industry is remarkably varied and rich, and those who persist in advancing within it reach a highly rewarding career – both professionally and financially.
But there are a great many possible career directions in the industry, and that can be confusing. So here are a few common directions in the electrical field worth getting to know in more depth:
A holder of a certified electrician's licence is someone who has successfully completed certified electrician studies and then worked for a year as an electrician's assistant, followed by a further two years as a practical electrician.
This is a grade in high demand in the economy for a wide range of needs:
Professionally, an electrical technician is the next stage after a certified electrician (for those who skip the chief electrician stage). The licence permits work with much heavier current – 3×400 amps – and therefore also allows work in a range of additional areas, such as maintaining buildings' electrical systems, designing buildings such as hotels and factories, and carrying out inspections with the electric company for large buildings.
An electrical practical engineer is the next grade up the ladder after an electrical technician. They can work with very large factories and even with a small community such as a kibbutz.
By contrast, becoming an electrical engineer requires a four-year degree course, and it allows you to work in further areas such as network design, high voltage, communications, computing, power systems and more – including working on any building with no limit on the size of the installation.
A senior electrician, such as an electrical technician, practical engineer or engineer, can take an electrical inspector's course, which allows them to carry out work with higher requirements – such as conducting inspections and passing or failing buildings, for example.
A restricted-licence electrician, by contrast, is an electrician licensed to work on a particular installation or a specific system, because they have studied that system and acquired the relevant specialist expertise at their place of work – for example, an electrician working permanently at a particular factory.
In summary, there is plenty of room to develop in the electrical field, and the reward for those who persist is particularly worthwhile.
