Certified Electrical Contractor

Working in the electrical field requires a high level of knowledge, experience, responsibility and reliability – all the more so when it comes to an electrical contractor, who designs and installs complex electrical systems, takes responsibility for the electrical systems of entire buildings, and is expected to meet very high standards of work. What else is worth knowing about a certified electrical contractor?

What is a certified electrical contractor?

There is sometimes confusion between different terms in technical fields such as electricity. It is therefore worth distinguishing between a certified electrician – a professional in the electrical field licensed to carry out a wide range of electrical works – and a registered electrical contractor, who is a certified electrician by training but has considerably more experience, with more complex systems, more complex projects and larger electrical works.

That experience allows them to carry out electrical works that are far larger and more complex than a certified electrician can – mainly the design, installation and maintenance of complex electrical systems, on a large scale and at higher budget levels.

What exactly is a certified electrical contractor?

A certified electrical contractor – or, more precisely, a registered electrical contractor – is an electrical contractor listed in the Registrar of Contractors. This is a government site listing all registered contractors.

To be listed in the register, an electrical contractor must have at least 5 years' experience in the type of electrical works they wish to carry out as a contractor. They must also have a clean criminal record, must not be bankrupt or a member of a corporation undergoing liquidation, and must successfully pass a series of examinations and assessments.

How do you choose a certified electrical contractor?

Despite the above, being listed in the Registrar of Contractors is not on its own a sufficient basis for choosing the contractor you will work with. To do that, you should check whether their classification is appropriate for the type of work you need, whether they have experience in that specific type of work, whether their previous clients considered them reliable, responsible and professional, and whether they are able to carry out work to the standard you expect.

Classification of registered electrical contractors

A short visit to the government Registrar of Contractors website will show you that there are several classifications of registered electrical contractors in the electrical field.

The different classifications indicate the ability of a registered electrical contractor, or an electrical works contracting company, to carry out electrical works of a particular scale, in line with the budget level allocated to the project.

The higher the classification, the larger the projects the contractor can serve you on – including projects running into millions of shekels. The classification is determined by the authorities following various examinations and checks, and is therefore considered highly reliable.

In summary

An electrical contractor listed in the Registrar of Contractors can carry out complex projects in the electrical field, at various scales, according to their classification level.
